We"ve all seen it. The parent or coach who stands on the sideline and abuses the ref, shouts at his or her child, or is critical of the opposition. It looks and sounds terrible; it's embarrassing for everyone else and its easy to forget at times that it's kids sport you are watching. Very often, junior rugby is not refereed by qualified refs but by parents or coaches who have put their hand up – without them there would be no rugby game for the children to play in. It's unacceptable for these volunteers to suffer verbal attacks and this initiative is an attempt to improve the standard of supporter behaviour at grounds across the union this winter. This weekend, kids rugby launches across our city and the rugby experience for children, their families and volunteers should be an enjoyable one. On behalf of the Auckland Rugby Union, we encourage our sideline supporters to bring a positive attitude to the rugby this Saturday.
